What to look for

A sliding saw cuts wider boards; check the cutting capacity at 90 and 45 degrees against what you will cut.

Models worth comparing

Budget

Evolution R210SMS+

DIYers fitting skirting, decking or shelving who want a light sliding saw that can also cut metal and plastic with the supplied blade.

  • Supplied multi-material blade cuts wood, mild steel, aluminium and plastic
  • Sliding head gives a 230 mm crosscut from a compact 210 mm blade
  • Light enough to carry at 11.2 kg, with a laser guide and slide rail protector

Watch out for: It needs some assembly out of the box, bevels one way only, and a reviewer found the front clamp did not hold thin timber as firmly as hoped.

Mid-range

Makita LS0815FLN

Keen DIYers and finish carpenters who want an accurate, compact sliding saw for skirting, architrave and flooring.

  • Twin-rail slide gives a 305 mm crosscut from a 216 mm blade
  • Laser and LED light to mark the cut, plus soft start
  • Mitres to 50° left and 60° right

Watch out for: It bevels 48° to the left but only 5° to the right, so some compound cuts mean flipping the workpiece, and the dust bag is basic.

Premium

DeWalt DWS780

Serious DIYers and trades cutting wide boards and large timbers who want big capacity and a reliable cut-line guide.

  • 305 mm blade with a 303 mm by 110 mm crosscut
  • XPS shadow-line light shows where the blade will fall without calibration
  • Double bevel to 49° each way, so there is no need to flip the workpiece

Watch out for: At 24.8 kg it is heavy and bulky, so it is better on a stand or bench than carried from room to room.

Pro

Bosch Professional GCM 12 GDL

Workshop users who want the widest crosscut here but have little room behind the saw, thanks to its glide arm instead of rails.

  • Glide arm replaces sliding rails, so the saw needs far less space behind it
  • Widest crosscut on this list at 341 mm, with 104 mm depth
  • Double bevel to 47° each way, with soft start and a twin-line laser

Watch out for: It weighs 29.4 kg, and a long-term owner found the laser hard to see in daylight and dust collection weak on thick timber.
