What to look for

Pendulum action cuts faster in wood; variable speed and a dust blower help you follow a line.

Budget

Bosch PST 700 E

Occasional DIYers making curved and straight cuts in sheet material and thin timber who want a light corded saw with no batteries to buy.

  • Light for a corded jigsaw at 1.7 kg, which makes curves easier to steer
  • Variable speed and tool-free SDS blade changes
  • Switchable air blower and dust port help keep the cutting line visible

Watch out for: There is no pendulum (orbital) action and the maximum wood depth is 70 mm, so it is slower in thick timber than the cordless saws here.

500 W (mains)
Stroke rate
500–3,100 spm
Cut depth (wood)
70 mm
Cut depth (steel)

Mid-range

Ryobi RJS18X-0 ONE+ HP Brushless Jigsaw

Home DIYers already on Ryobi's ONE+ battery system who want a cordless saw that can handle deep timber cuts.

  • Brushless motor with a 25 mm stroke and up to 3,400 strokes a minute
  • Cuts timber up to 135 mm deep
  • Four-stage pendulum action, LED light, blower and tool-free blade clamp

Watch out for: It is sold as a bare tool, and Ryobi quotes its best runtime with a 5.0 Ah battery, so budget for a decent battery and charger if you do not have one.

  • Cuts 135 mm of wood or 10 mm of steel, with a 26 mm stroke
  • Tool-free blade change, LED light, blower and electronic brake

  • Brushless motor, all-metal blade clamp and four pendulum settings
  • Cuts 135 mm of wood, with a shoe that bevels to 47°
  • Twin LEDs, a dust blower and an extraction adaptor are included

Watch out for: It is a bare unit with no battery or charger, and one hands-on review found the anti-splinter insert tended to work loose.
