What to look for

Battery life and a comfortable strap decide whether you keep wearing it.

Models worth comparing

Budget

Xiaomi Smart Band 10

First-time buyers who want a bright screen, sleep and heart-rate tracking and long battery life for a small outlay.

  • 1.72-inch AMOLED screen rated up to 1,500 nits
  • Xiaomi claims up to 21 days of battery life in typical use
  • Over 150 sport modes, 5ATM water resistance and heart-rate tracking while swimming

Watch out for: There is no built-in GPS, so you need your phone with you for distance, and TechRadar found the standard strap's clasp came undone too easily.

Mid-range

Amazfit Active 3 Premium

Runners and gym-goers who want watch-style tracking with GPS and offline maps without paying big-brand prices.

  • Built-in GPS using five satellite systems, with offline maps and turn-by-turn directions
  • 1.32-inch AMOLED under sapphire glass, rated up to 3,000 nits
  • Zepp Coach running plans and a claimed battery life of up to 12 days

Watch out for: It does not detect and start workouts automatically, so you have to remember to begin recording yourself.

Premium

Garmin CIRQA Smart Band

People who want discreet, screen-free health and sleep tracking that feeds into Garmin Connect, especially existing Garmin owners and cyclists.

  • Screenless band with round-the-clock health and sleep tracking and automatic activity detection
  • Garmin claims up to 10 days between charges
  • No subscription needed; coaching extras sit behind the optional Garmin Connect+ plan

Watch out for: It has no GPS of its own and relies on your phone, and it is costly for a band that shows fewer metrics than a full Garmin watch.

Pro

Garmin Forerunner 170 Music

Runners who want a dedicated GPS training watch with music stored on the wrist, so the phone can stay at home.

  • Built-in GPS with a choice of GPS-only and all-systems satellite modes
  • AMOLED display with an optional always-on setting
  • Stores and plays music on the watch itself

Watch out for: It is mostly a software update on the Forerunner 165 and misses out on Garmin's newest GPS and health-sensor hardware.
