What to look for

Blade size sets the depth of cut; a guide rail or parallel fence makes straight cuts far easier.

Models worth comparing

Budget

Bosch PKS 55

Occasional DIYers cutting sheet material and timber near a socket who want a known brand with no batteries to buy.

  • Corded 1,200 W motor, so it runs as long as you need
  • Parallel guide supplied for straight cuts along an edge
  • Still cuts 38 mm deep with the blade tilted to 45°

Watch out for: The 160 mm blade limits depth to 55 mm, so thicker timber needs two passes, and it is not built for heavy daily trade use.

Mid-range

Evolution R185CCS

Renovators who need one corded saw that can cut timber, laminate, plastic and thin steel with the same blade.

  • Supplied multi-material blade also cuts mild steel up to 6 mm thick
  • Deep 64 mm cut at 90° from a 185 mm blade
  • Bevels up to 60°, with a dust port and adaptor included

Watch out for: At 4.9 kg it is the heaviest saw here, and the trailing cable and basic dust collection need managing in a finished room.

Premium

Makita DHS680 18V LXT Brushless Circular Saw

Makita LXT owners who want a light cordless saw for flooring, sheet goods and second-fix work around the house.

  • Brushless motor with automatic speed control that adjusts to the cut
  • Electronic brake and LED light for safer, clearer cutting
  • About 3.0–3.3 kg with a battery, light for a cordless saw

Watch out for: Maximum depth is 57 mm, so 75 mm timber cannot be cut in one pass, and the DHS680Z is sold without a battery or charger.

Pro

DeWalt DCS572 18V XR Brushless 184 mm Circular Saw

DeWalt 18V XR users who cut a lot of sheet material on site and want rail-guided, straight cuts without a cable.

  • Works with DeWalt's guide rail system for long, straight cuts
  • Larger 184 mm blade gives up to 58 mm depth from a battery saw
  • Tool-free depth and bevel adjustment, bevelling up to 57°

Watch out for: The DCS572N is tool only, so it only makes sense if you already own DeWalt 18V XR batteries; for occasional cuts near a socket a corded saw costs less.
