What to look for

115 mm suits most home jobs; a side handle, guard and a paddle or slide switch you can reach easily matter most.

Models worth comparing

Budget

Bosch UniversalGrind 750-115

Home DIYers who need to cut bolts, tiles or paving now and then and are happy working near a socket.

Corded 750 W motor, so there are no batteries to charge or buy
Slim housing and 1.8 kg weight keep it manageable one-handed with the side handle
Guard adjusts without tools for cutting, grinding and brushing

Watch out for: Bosch does not list an electronic brake or kickback cut-out on this DIY model, so it relies on careful handling and the side handle being fitted.

Power: 750 W (mains)
Disc: 115 mm
No-load speed: 12,000 rpm
Weight: 1.8 kg

Compact 115 mm cordless grinder running at up to 11,000 rpm
Anti-restart and electronic overload protection
Takes standard 115 mm discs on an M14 spindle

Watch out for: It uses an older brushed motor, so runtime and efficiency trail brushless rivals, and it is sold without a battery or charger.

Disc: 115 mm
No-load speed: 11,000 rpm
Weight: 2.0–2.3 kg (with battery)

Premium

Bosch Professional GWS 18V-10

Serious DIYers and trades on Bosch's blue 18V batteries who want a brushless grinder with a full set of safety electronics.

Brushless motor that Bosch rates as equivalent to 1,000 W
KickBack Control, Drop Control, Fast Brake and restart protection
A reviewer found the vibration-damped side handle made long grinding sessions more comfortable

Watch out for: At 2.1 kg before a battery goes on it is fairly heavy for overhead work, and batteries and a charger are extra.

Power: 18 V (battery not included)
Disc: 115 mm
No-load speed: 9,000 rpm
Weight: 2.1 kg (without battery)
