Sole Trader: Tax & Invoices, against other tax apps
The short answer
Most sole-trader tax and bookkeeping apps are built around two things: a feed from your bank, and sending quarterly updates to HMRC. If filing this year is what you are buying, choose an app that files. This one does not, yet.
What this one is built around instead is the record itself: invoices that meet HMRC's rules, mileage, receipts read on the phone, and knowing the costs your trade usually has. It works with no signal, there is no bank login to hand over, and the free tier has no entry limits.
Side by side
| What you need | What it usually takes | In this app |
|---|---|---|
| Quarterly updates to HMRC | Many tax apps file them | Not yet; the earliest this app could be listed for is 2027 to 2028 |
| Your transactions | A connection to your bank, which can break | No bank connection. Import a statement you downloaded, read on the phone |
| Invoices | Often a separate invoicing app | Invoices that meet HMRC's rules, and issuing one records the income |
| Construction Industry Scheme | Rarely handled on the invoice | The deduction comes off labour only, materials excluded, before VAT |
| Mileage | Sometimes, sometimes a separate app | Yes, at HMRC's approved rates, and recorded automatically if you want it |
| Receipts | Usually uploaded to be read | Photographed and read on the phone. Nothing is uploaded |
| Costs your trade usually has | A generic list of headings | Pick your trade, and the app knows its usual costs and points out a quarter with nothing under one |
| Works with no signal | Usually not | Yes, everything |
| An account | Required | Optional, only to keep a copy on another device |
| What it costs | Often a monthly subscription | A free tier with no entry limits. Pro is monthly or yearly |
Where another app may suit you better
If you need to file this year. An app that is recognised by HMRC sends your quarterly updates for you. This app produces the records and the figures, and every screen that could be mistaken for filing says so.
If you want your bank to fill in the records. A bank feed brings your transactions in without typing. This app never connects to your bank.
If your accountant wants a login of their own. Some apps give the accountant a portal. This one produces a document for the year and a spreadsheet, which you send.
Which to choose
If filing now, a bank feed or an accountant's login is what you are buying, choose an app built around those.
If you drive for work, invoice under CIS, want your records kept on your phone, or your trade has costs a generic list hides, this app is built for that. Keep the records. Keep them straight.
