Rihal is in development and is not on either store yet. The full app runs free in your browser on this site. If something is wrong, or you have a question, write to the address at the bottom of this page.
What the app is, and what it is not
Rihal brings the Quran and the major hadith collections together, from authentic Sunni sources, with the name of every text, translation and grade shown where it appears. It also works out prayer times and the qibla on your phone.
It is not a source of rulings. Translations and explanations are those of their named translators, and hadith grades are quoted from the scholars named with them. For a question about your own situation, ask a scholar you trust.
Common questions
Do I need an account? No. There is no sign-in of any kind.
Does it work with no signal? Yes. The Quran, translations, hadith and prayer times are all on the phone. Recitation needs a connection unless you save a surah for offline listening first.
Which text of the Quran is it? The Uthmani text in the Hafs reading, as published by Tanzil. Every ayah has been checked letter for letter against the King Fahd Complex's text and Quran.com.
Where do the hadith come from, and are they checked? From an open dataset of the nine collections. The Arabic of every hadith has been compared with Sunnah.com, and the few that still differ say so on their page. Translations and grades are waiting for review by a scholar, and every hadith page says so.
My prayer times differ from my mosque's. Mosques use different calculation methods and sometimes add a few minutes. Choose the method your mosque uses on the Prayer tab, and the Asr time (Hanafi or the majority view). The default is the Karachi method with the Hanafi Asr.
The qibla compass points the wrong way. Move the phone in a figure of eight to calibrate the compass, and keep it away from metal and magnets. Turning on location gives true north rather than magnetic north.
Prayer alerts arrive late on Android. Allow "Alarms and reminders" for Rihal in the phone's settings, and exclude it from battery saving.
Is the web version the whole app? Yes: the same app, built from the same code. A few things only a phone can do are left out of it: prayer alerts and the adhan, adding dates to your phone's calendar, snapshots, backup to a folder and vibration. The first visit downloads the Quran (about 48 MB) and the hadith collections load the first time you open them; your browser keeps them.
My bookmarks disappeared from the web version. They are kept in your browser's storage on that device. Clearing the site's data, or using a private window, starts afresh, and a different browser or device has its own copy.
I found a mistake. Tap "Report a mistake" at the foot of the ayah or hadith: it opens your email app with the reference filled in. Or write to the address below and say which page, ayah or hadith number. Corrections to the text are checked against the sources before anything is changed.
